Nutrition for diabetes: a list of dishes for every day. Diet for diabetes, what can and cannot be eaten? If you have diabetes, what can you eat?

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder in which glucose levels in the body increase. Hyperglycemia negatively affects the condition of blood vessels and can provoke the development of atherosclerosis, which subsequently leads to heart attack, stroke, and deterioration in function internal organs, decreased vision and other complications.

For warning negative consequences hyperglycemia, it is recommended not only to follow the doctor’s recommendations regarding treatment, but also to eat properly. This article outlines the basic principles of dietary nutrition in the presence of diabetes.

The basis of the therapeutic diet for this disease is to reduce the load on the pancreas and gradual weight loss. Basic Rules proper nutrition:

  • reducing the calorie content of the daily diet by limiting the consumption of carbohydrates and animal lipids;
  • a sufficient amount of proteins and fats of plant origin;
  • exclusion of easily digestible carbohydrates;
  • limiting the use of spices and salt;
  • permitted dishes must be served boiled and stewed; anything fried or smoked should be completely abandoned;
  • regular and split meals;
  • inclusion of sweeteners in the menu (for example, sorbitol or xylitol);
  • daily fluid intake, which does not exceed 1600 ml per day;
  • strict adherence to dietary rules, taking into account the glycemic index of foods (this indicator reflects how quickly foods are broken down and converted into glucose). The lower the glycemic index, the slower the sugar level in the body rises.

It should be noted that the correct ratio of proteins, lipids and carbohydrates is important, which should correspond to the proportion 16:24:60. In addition, the caloric content of food must correspond to energy expenditure, therefore, when drawing up a menu, you should take into account age and gender, body weight, as well as the characteristics of work and physical activity. Also, all dishes must contain enough microelements and vitamins.

According to WHO statistics, about 10% of the planet's population suffers from it, and the number of sufferers is growing, and this disease is becoming younger every year. I believe that everyone in our time should be able to take care of themselves and loved ones if necessary. Proper nutrition is the most important condition for a normal life with diabetes. If in type 1 the diagnosis is made quickly, blood is donated “for sugar”, then in the second case the diagnosis is more difficult. The symptoms are similar to many other diseases. Let's see when you should be wary and go to the doctor:

And thirdly, get rid of bad habits if you have them. Overeating, by the way, also applies to these. And, of course, we adhere to proper and healthy nutrition.

If you know that there were diabetics in your family, ideally it is better to eat according to the “table number 9” diet, which we discussed above. In any case, you won't make it worse for yourself.

I wish you good health!

Good day, dear readers and guests of the blog “Sugar is normal!” The topic of food and diet in diabetology is inexhaustible, endless, and sometimes controversial, so today I again devote an entire article to it.
We’ll talk about what you can and can’t eat if you have type 1 and type 2 diabetes, what foods (fruits, vegetables, and others) a person with diabetes needs, and we’ll create lists and tables for convenience.
I really hope that you will heed my words, since I do not take the material out of thin air and this knowledge has been tested by medical experience.
Perhaps for some the information will be too revolutionary. Yes, this is exactly so and be prepared for a “brain explosion”, since what you knew before will be subject to my harshest criticism.
You can agree or disagree, argue with me, but the facts remain facts and you just have to accept them or reject them.

What foods are they pushing on you?

When talking about food products, you need to remember that many beneficial features exaggerated, and the probable danger of some is unfounded. Remember that our consciousness is controlled by the media, which act in the interests of paid organizations.
In other words, he who pays calls the tune. This has always been and will always be. Let's think about what sells best? What you will buy again and again is the product that causes mental or even physical addiction.

Alcohol, tobacco, sweets and even bread are the most consumed goods around the world. And all these products are addictive. If everyone knows how dangerous alcohol and tobacco are, but still go on a rampage, then many people are not even aware of the dangers of sweets and white flour. But in vain...
Scientists have long proven an addictive addiction to sweets and baked goods. Try to limit yourself to these products for a month; more than 90% will experience real withdrawal and subsequent breakdown. This is where not only the giants that produce Snickers and Mars make money, but also small shops that sell fresh baked goods, such as Pyshka or Zhar-Svezhar. You'll always come back for another round of donuts because they're delicious, fill you up quickly, and are cheap.

I recommend reading: . Here you will find the answer to one of the most frequently asked questions about nutrition for diabetes.
What do you see in advertising on TV? Chocolate bars, cookies, juices, soda and other “snacks” that satisfy the appetite for a while, and then wild hunger sets in because the body has not received normal nutrients, he is still hungry. And how beautifully they advertise, starting from the coveted smile of a sexy girl, ending with cute kittens... Yes, they play on your feelings, gentlemen!

Have you ever seen an advertisement for eggs or fish or real butter? And you’re unlikely to see it, because it’s not addictive; you can’t eat these foods in kilograms, because they give you long-term satiety. Besides, quality products are expensive. And you can gobble up candy and soda without getting tired, and the more you eat, the more you want.
So fast carbohydrates, namely all sweets, store drinks, baked goods and even bread, should be sharply limited not only in people with diabetes, but also in healthy people. It is these foods that lead to the development of diabetes in the future, because they lead to metabolic disorders and obesity.

And I advise those with type 1 diabetes not to delude themselves either. Do you think it’s enough to just inject insulin and eat as much as you want? In essence this is true, but over time you may start to have problems. Do you think there are no fat diabetics on insulin or with other health problems?
I am not a “sugar- or bread-hater,” I am for reasonable consumption, when these products become a delicacy that is expected, just as they once waited for a piece of meat on the holiday table, because it was not available every day. Look for pleasure outside of your diet, believe me, there are so many interesting things in the world...

Is there a difference between food for type 1 and type 2?

At first, people with type 1 diabetes do not have problems with food. I calculated the insulin, injected it and ate what I wanted. But, as I already said, this is a temporary phenomenon and you will have to pay for food pleasures one day.
The diet is much more relevant for type 2 diabetes, because normalization of blood sugar levels, successful weight loss, and improvement of overall health depend more on it.
Therefore, everything that I will write next concerns only type 2 diabetes, but conditionally these rules apply to any person (with or without diabetes). If you wish, then, people with type 1, join us!

I talked in more detail about the nutrition of patients with type 1 diabetes in the article

What can you eat if you have type 2 diabetes?

So, we’ve talked about what you shouldn’t eat if you have any type of diabetes, now let’s figure out what you can.
Allowing is always more difficult than prohibiting. And all because a ban is a ban, and permissibility always comes with reservations and conventions that require an individual approach.

The list of permitted products may vary depending on the severity of diabetes and sugar compensation. The worse the situation, the stricter the restrictions. If you want faster results, you will also have to show will and patience.

I tried to generalize and came up with two lists:

  1. Foods that can be eaten by all people with diabetes, regardless of the severity of the condition.
  2. Foods that can be added when good compensation is achieved and health improves, or for those who initially do not have a particularly bad situation and do not require strict restrictions.

I’ll say right away that restrictions are imposed only on products containing carbohydrates, both simple and complex.
The rest of the products, which contain mainly proteins and fats, are not limited, i.e. you eat enough of them to fill up. They will also be on the lists. Just because a product is completely legal does not mean you should eat it until you feel sick. There must be moderation in everything!

A new article has been published on the blog. Follow the link and find out how to eat sweet berries correctly.

Answers on questions

What fruits can you eat if you have diabetes?

And once again for those who are in an armored train and without a walkie-talkie, I will repeat what I wrote above. Fruits are allowed only when diabetes is successfully compensated, but this also has its limitations.
Up to 100 g of local seasonal fruits and berries per day is allowed. It is recommended to split this dose into 2-3 doses.
Completely excluded: bananas, grapes, persimmons, cherries, pineapple, papaya, passion fruit, peaches, apricots, watermelon, melon, prunes, dates, figs, dried apricots, raisins, candied fruits.

I described another article about diet for type 2 diabetes in the article. Follow the link to learn more about how to eat with this disease.

What cereals can you eat if you have diabetes?

In fact, none, but given our all-Russian love for porridge, I can allow you to enjoy a bowl of porridge once a week, but only if it is wild rice, steamed buckwheat or lentils with quinoa.
I recommend checking your blood sugar 1.5 hours after eating and if your sugar has become higher than 3 mmol/l from the original level, then this product is not suitable for you and you need to stop using it.

What vegetables to eat if you have diabetes

To put it even more simply, choose vegetables that grow above the ground, because they are low in starch. The exception is pumpkin and squash, which are not allowed for everyone. Corn in any of its forms is also completely excluded.
Those that grow underground contain a lot of starch, which is easily digestible and increases blood sugar. The absolute exception is potatoes. The rest are possible, but be careful.
I hope I clearly explained which products you need to choose. If you have any questions, ask them in the comments below. I answer everyone!

With warmth and care, endocrinologist Lebedeva Dilyara Ilgizovna

Blood sugar levels in healthy people - both children and adults - range from 3.3 to 5.5 mmol/l. Its increase can be caused by various reasons, including stress, pregnancy, serious illness. In such cases, blood sugar returns to normal after the root cause is eliminated.

Even a slight increase in sugar levels is a reason to consult a doctor to check the condition of the pancreas. In addition, it is necessary to reconsider your diet, since with high blood sugar, diet is often the only way to bring its level back to normal.

An increase in sugar levels above 5.5 mmol/l is called hyperglycemia. If this indicator, when two tests are performed with a certain interval, turns out to be higher than or equal to 7.0 mmol/l, we can talk about the presence of diabetes mellitus. Elevated blood glucose levels are especially common in women over 50 years of age, and therefore they are recommended to visit an endocrinologist at least once a year to prevent the development and timely diagnosis of diabetes mellitus.

Dietary nutrition will help prevent the development of diabetes mellitus and its accompanying pathologies, as well as normalize weight that increases due to hyperglycemia.

In addition to changes in diet, if blood glucose levels increase, you need to stop drinking alcoholic beverages and smoking, and begin to lead a physically active lifestyle by including sports in your routine. However, such exercises are indicated only after stabilization of blood glucose levels. A healthy lifestyle and a special diet are beneficial for everyone, they ensure that weight is maintained at a normal level, bad cholesterol is reduced, and normal work gastrointestinal tract.

You should pay attention to the following symptoms, which may indicate an increase in blood glucose levels:

  • constant thirst, dry mouth, frequent urination (including at night) and increased amount of urine discharge;
  • decreased performance, fatigue, lethargy, weakness;
  • increased appetite and weight loss;
  • delayed healing of skin lesions, boils;
  • decreased immunity;
  • itching of the skin and mucous membranes.

The presence of at least one of the listed signs may indicate hyperglycemia.

First of all, you should exclude from your diet foods that increase blood glucose levels, limiting the amount of carbohydrates you consume, especially easily digestible ones. In addition, you need to reduce the overall calorie content of the diet (for overweight people, calorie intake should not exceed 1800–2000 kcal), follow a diet, maintain water balance, and also take care of a sufficient content of vitamins in food.

It is necessary to monitor the content of proteins, fats and carbohydrates (BJC) in food, the optimal ratio of which in the diet is 20/35/45%, respectively. A diet for high blood sugar also requires compliance with the drinking regime: you should drink at least 2.5 liters of clean water per day.

In addition, the method of preparing food is important, since with hyperglycemia there is an increased susceptibility to blockage of blood vessels, which can be provoked by excessive cholesterol in the blood.

Meals with high blood sugar should be regular and fractional, divided into 4-7 meals throughout the day in small portions. It is necessary to start eating only after the feeling of hunger appears, and at the first feeling of fullness, get up from the table in order to prevent overeating. For those who are used to eating quite a lot, it is recommended to drink a glass of water before meals to partially fill the stomach and speed up the onset of satiety.

The menu for people with hyperglycemia is developed individually by the attending physician, taking into account the concentration of sugar in the blood, intolerance to certain foods, body weight, the presence of diseases, and lifestyle.

Diet for high blood sugar

The basis of the diet should be fresh, baked or boiled vegetables and fruits, teas and herbal drinks. This does not mean that you have to give up sweets completely. It is necessary to control how much sugar is contained in a particular product in order to prevent the development of complications.

You should be careful when choosing fruits. For example, avoid eating fruits that contain a lot of sugar, such as bananas and grapes. You can eat apples, grapefruits, pomelo, oranges, peaches, pears, apricots, kiwis, pomegranates and other fruits that have low carbohydrate content. At the same time, it is necessary to control their quantity, since in large volumes, even fruits with a low sugar content can have a detrimental effect on blood glucose levels.

When choosing products, you should take into account their glycemic index (GI) - the rate of breakdown in human body any carbohydrate-containing product in comparison with the rate of breakdown of absolute carbohydrate - glucose, whose GI is equal to 100 units and is considered the reference. Essentially, this indicator reflects the effect of foods consumed on blood sugar levels. When consuming foods with a low GI, the concentration of sugar in the blood increases slowly, and its instantaneous level will be lower than when consuming foods with a high index.

A diet for high blood sugar should include foods with a GI of up to 49 units. After stabilization of glucose levels, you can add to the diet no more than three times a week up to 150 g of products with an index of 50–69 units. Food products with an index value of 70 units and above cannot be consumed, since they contain only empty carbohydrates.

In addition, the method of preparing food is important, since with hyperglycemia there is an increased susceptibility to blockage of blood vessels, which can be provoked by excessive cholesterol in the blood. In this regard, among the cooking methods, it is recommended to give preference to boiling, baking and steaming.

What to eat if you have high blood sugar

List of permitted products:

  • cereals (buckwheat, oatmeal, barley, spelled) – help lower blood sugar levels and prevent the formation of cholesterol;
  • legumes (beans, beans, peas, chickpeas) are a source of slowly digestible carbohydrates, the utilization of which requires a minimal amount of insulin;
  • vegetables (cabbage, eggplant, zucchini, pumpkin, lettuce, tomatoes, garlic, olives, fresh beets, cucumbers, etc.) – raw, boiled or baked;
  • fruits containing a large number of sugar (gooseberries, any citrus fruits, apples, strawberries, plums, raspberries, pears) - they should be consumed after meals;
  • low-fat fish (pike perch, pollock, crucian carp, perch), as well as salmon containing essential Omega-3 amino acids - boiled or steamed, no more than 150 g per day;
  • dietary meat (chicken, rabbit, veal, beef), boiled tongue, liver, sausages (dietary and diabetic);
  • fermented milk products (kefir, homemade yogurt, fermented baked milk, yogurt - no more than 2 glasses per day), sour cream, cottage cheese, low-fat hard cheese;
  • eggs, no more than 2 pcs. in a day;
  • a small amount of honey, sweets for diabetics;
  • vegetable, butter, ghee.

In a diet with high blood sugar, first of all, you should limit the consumption or exclude foods that contain an excess of quickly absorbed and easily digestible carbohydrates - pure sugar, jam, sweets, confectionery, ice cream, some fruits and dried fruits (bananas, raisins , grapes, dates, figs), semolina, polished rice, pasta, pies and other products made from butter or puff pastry, sweet juices and drinks. The large amount of carbohydrates they contain is quickly absorbed in the intestines, sharply increasing blood sugar levels.

You should also not eat strong broths, milk soups with rice or semolina, pork and other fatty meats, fish and poultry, smoked meats, canned meats and those with added butter, fatty and salty cheeses, cream, sweet curd mass, marinades, pickles, mayonnaise, ketchup, ready-made sauces (except soy sauce), hot or fatty sauces.

First of all, you should exclude from your diet foods that increase blood glucose levels, limiting the amount of carbohydrates you consume, especially easily digestible ones.

A large number of permitted foods for high blood sugar allows you to diversify the menu as follows:

  • first courses: borscht, cabbage soup, vegetable soups, weak broths, beetroot soup, okroshka;
  • meat and fish dishes: fish aspic, beef jelly, boiled or steamed meat and fish;
  • side dishes: steamed, boiled, stewed or baked vegetables; porridge (buckwheat, oatmeal, pearl barley, hominy or corn porridge);
  • sauces: prepared in weak broth or vegetable broth;
  • salads: vinaigrettes, vegetable salads, seafood salads, vegetable caviar;
  • bakery products: rye or protein bread, whole grain bread, bran bread (no more than 300 g per day);
  • desserts: casseroles and puddings made from low-fat cottage cheese, jellies, mousses;
  • drinks without sugar: compotes, coffee with milk, tea, rosehip decoction, juices (berry, fruit, vegetable).

All information about what to eat during hyperglycemia is advisory in nature. The endocrinologist develops the final prescription and menu individually for each patient.

Menu options for the day

Option I:

  • 1st breakfast: low-fat cottage cheese, buckwheat porridge with milk, rosehip decoction;
  • 2nd breakfast: wheat bran decoction or unsweetened juice;
  • lunch: vegetarian borscht, steamed meatballs, jelly, tea;
  • afternoon snack: allowed fruits;
  • dinner: baked fish, stewed cabbage, tea;
  • snack: yogurt or kefir.

Option II:

  • 1st breakfast: boiled egg, omelette or porridge, tea;
  • 2nd breakfast: vegetable or fruit salad;
  • lunch: first course (any of those allowed), cutlets or steamed meat, jelly;
  • afternoon snack: vegetable salad, cottage cheese or fruit, rosehip decoction;
  • dinner: fish with vegetables, tea.

Following the principles of a diet for high blood sugar can help stabilize the condition. But in order to consolidate this result, one should conduct healthy image life and adhere to a low-carbohydrate diet throughout life.

Video from YouTube on the topic of the article:

What can you eat if you have diabetes? This question is asked by every patient who is recommended to adjust their menu. After all, diet is the basis of therapy that helps avoid surges in glycemia in the body.

Diabetes mellitus is an endocrine pathology due to which glucose metabolism is disrupted. Treatment is focused on normalizing and stabilizing blood sugar levels through changes in diet, physical activity, and medication.

Many people underestimate the importance of nutrition against the background of a “sweet” illness, and this is fundamentally wrong. In the case of a disease, especially the second type, this should not be disputed at all, since it is based on a metabolic disorder, which is primarily provoked by incorrect eating habits.

Let's find out what you can't eat if you have type 2 diabetes, and what is allowed? We will make a list of products that should be avoided, and also announce a list of acceptable ones for consumption.

It is important to reduce the consumption of foods rich in easily digestible carbohydrates. If you are overweight, you need to reduce your calorie intake per day, ideally to 2000 kilocalories. Calorie content may vary depending on the patient's physical activity.

Due to the restriction of many foods in the diet, the patient should additionally take vitamin or mineral complexes to compensate for the deficiency of essential substances for normal functioning.

Type 2 diabetes requires certain dietary changes:

  • Reducing calories while maintaining the energy value of food for the body.
  • The energy value must equal the amount of energy expended.
  • To normalize metabolic processes, it is recommended to eat at the same time.
  • In addition to main meals, you need to have snacks to prevent feelings of hunger and a possible breakdown in overeating.
  • In the second half of the day, the intake of carbohydrates is reduced to a minimum.
  • To quickly get enough, the menu includes as many vegetables and fruits as possible, rich in dietary fiber (choose food from the list of allowed foods).
  • To remove excess fluid from the body, reduce salt intake to 4 grams per day.
  • When choosing bakery products, it is recommended to choose products made from rye flour with the addition of bran.

A balanced diet helps to neutralize the negative symptoms of a hyperglycemic state, helps reduce glucose levels and improve overall well-being. And also, getting rid of bad eating habits normalizes metabolic processes in the body.

It is necessary to focus on fruits, vegetables, dairy and fermented milk products, and lean meat.

After all, the absolute exclusion of glucose as the only source of energy means a rapid depletion of natural energy reserves.

What can you eat if you have type 2 diabetes?

Sugar level

What should diabetics eat, how to create their daily menu, and many other questions are of interest to diabetics when planning their diet. If patients of type 1 on insulin can eat almost everything, with the exception of fried and fatty foods, then with the second type everything is somewhat more complicated.

When creating a menu, you should take into account the glycemic index of a product - an indicator of how the concentration of sugar in the body increases after eating a particular food. There is a complete table on the Internet, even with exotic products.

Based on the table, the patient will be able to create his diet so that it does not affect glycemia. There are three types of GI: low – up to 49 units, medium – ranging from 50 to 69 units, and high – from 70 and above.

What can you eat if you have type 2 diabetes:

  • It is better to choose bread in the section for diabetics. Daily norm does not exceed 300 grams.
  • First courses are prepared with vegetables, as they are characterized by lower calorie content and have a small amount grain units. It is acceptable to eat first courses based on a second fish or meat broth.
  • Diabetics are allowed to eat exclusively lean meat or fish. Steamed, baked. The main thing is to avoid frying.
  • Chicken eggs are allowed, but in limited quantities, due to the fact that they contribute to an increase in the content of bad cholesterol in the blood. It is acceptable to eat one per day.
  • Dairy products should be low in fat. As for fruits/berries, give preference to raspberries, kiwis, and apples, which not only help lower sugar, but also reduce cholesterol in the blood.
  • Vegetables such as tomatoes, tomatoes, radishes, and parsley can be eaten without restrictions.
  • It is allowed to consume creamy and vegetable oil, the norm for people with diabetes is 2 tablespoons per day.

Regardless of the type of diabetes, the patient is recommended to monitor their sugar several times a day - after waking up, before breakfast, after meals/physical activity, and so on.

Medical practice shows that already on the fifth day of proper and balanced nutrition, the symptoms of hyperglycemia subside and improve general health, and glucose approaches the target level.

The following drinks are allowed for consumption: homemade fruit drinks with cranberries, lingonberries, compote with dried apples, lightly brewed tea, still mineral water, decoctions with added medicinal herbs to reduce sugar.
