Chemical composition

All parts of the plant contain so-called cardiac glycosides. These are substances that help normalize heart rhythm. The largest amount of them is found in flowers and seeds. The grass also contains these substances. Erizmin, erizimoside and some other glycosides have been isolated from jaundice.

In addition to them, the plant contains flavonoids, glucose, fatty acids, including oleic, erucic, palmitic, alpha-linoleic and linolenic.

There are also organic acids: malic, ascorbic, citric. Contains a certain amount of bitterness.

The medicinal properties of gray jaundice are quite varied. It has a calming and hypnotic effect. Performs diuretic, choleretic and expectorant functions.

It is an anti-inflammatory and anti-scorbutic agent.

Decoctions of jaundice seeds and leaves are also used externally. They are used to make lotions and compresses for the treatment of purulent tumors, varicose veins and some other diseases.

Collection and preparation

The herb of the gray jaundice is collected during the flowering period, because It is at this time that it contains the greatest amount of useful substances. Thus, the collection period falls at the end of May or beginning of June, depending on the timing of flowering.
Harvesting grass is quite simple. It needs to be cut, collected in bundles and placed under a canopy in a well-ventilated place. The ideal option is the attic of a private house. The grass can be spread out or hung.
Plants are collected in the first half of the day, but only after the dew has dried. Any ingress of moisture irreparably damages the raw materials.
When the plants are dry, i.e. After about a few weeks, the thin parts are crushed and the thick parts are disposed of. The finished crushed herb is placed in paper or fabric bags, in jars with access to air. Shelf life is one year.
