The opinion that an alcoholic is an unemployed person aimlessly wasting his life has been refuted quite recently. The stereotype was debunked by harsh statistics, according to which a person who is engaged in the work process for 50 hours a week, which is slightly more than a standard working day or a 6-day work week, suffers from alcohol addiction more often than others.

The study was conducted by New Zealand scientists over 30 years on a group of enthusiasts born in 1977. The conclusion is simple: the more intensely a person is involved at work, the more often he has the need to relax. And what if alcohol is the most effective in this matter!

Russian scientists conducted similar studies, the results of which were not encouraging. Constant stress, the frantic rhythm of megacities and workload lead people to regular consumption of alcoholic beverages. Moreover, susceptibility to such unloading is recorded more often at the age of 25 to 45 years.

Addiction comes from childhood

In Russia everything is somewhat different. Alcoholism in the country has become significantly younger, which has caused concern and much controversy in scientific circles. Studying the phenomenon of rampant drunkenness, scientists came to the conclusion that alcohol addictions can form in childhood.

And we are not talking here at all about the genetic theory of its origin. It's all about eating habits. Thus, the traditional diet of bottle-fed infants necessarily contains kefir, which contains alkaloids in small dosages (the alkaloid salsolinol is one of the causes of alcohol dependence).

Kvass is also nothing more than a natural fermentation product and contains small doses of ethanol. Consumption of these drinks is unlikely to lead to addiction; there is no evidence of this, but it can develop eating habits.

Alcoholism itself is not such an ancient diagnosis, although the history of alcoholic beverages goes back to ancient times. If we consider it as poison, then it is worth remembering that poison in small dosages only brings health benefits. Moderate intake of alcoholic beverages:

  • increases concentration and reaction speed;
  • prevents colds.

Scientists from Massey University used data from 2,908 older New Zealanders (average age 65) collected from the government's Retired People's Health, Work and Lives Study. It is the most comprehensive study of aging in New Zealand because it lasted ten years and included typical members of the population aged 50 and over.

Adult respondents over the age of 50 were divided into groups based on their level of alcohol consumption, ranging from non-drinkers to those who drank alcoholic beverages more than three times a day. The scientists also specifically separated “illness quitters” (people who stopped drinking due to poor health) from “lifelong abstainers” (people who never drank alcohol).

At the first stage, a comparative analysis of these groups was carried out, which confirmed the findings of previous studies: moderate drinkers of both sexes were much healthier than heavy drinkers or non-drinkers. The analysis was based on participants' self-reported health status and level of physical activity.

However, it was found that moderate drinkers of both sexes were wealthier than heavy drinkers or non-drinkers. And when scientists added wealth into the equation, it turned out that among men, moderate alcohol consumption was not associated with improved health. In women, moderate drinking was still associated with health benefits, but given that only a small number of women drank moderate amounts of alcohol (4%), this effect is highly questionable.

Scientific research provides little evidence to suggest that moderate drinking is beneficial to health. Instead, they assume that older people's health and the amount of alcohol they drink simply reflects their financial well-being and social status.

It may be that the relationship between alcohol use and wealth in older adults reflects more about who drinks rather than how much one drinks.

Revisiting the effects of moderate alcohol consumption

If it becomes clear that alcohol does not benefit the health of older people, then how much should they drink? Scientists have not yet found an answer to this question.

Supporters of a sober life have an extremely negative attitude towards all alcoholic drinks, seeing them as the main evil of humanity. But everything requires a reasonable approach. Are there any benefits of alcohol for the human body, what do scientists think about it?

The claim that drinking alcohol in small doses has health benefits is actually an overblown myth. This statement is made by the vast majority of medical scientists, carefully analyzing the data obtained from foreign colleagues.

There is an opinion that the myth about the benefits of alcohol in small doses was presented to the wide mass of consumers by leading companies producing alcohol.

Recent, thorough research has shown that the benefits, if any, from drinking minimal amounts of alcohol are greatly exaggerated. This is the opinion of medical luminaries working in Britain. Their trials involved more than 50,000 people over the age of 50.

Research results

The final verdict of experts is unequivocal - to restore health and maintain it at a good level, it is recommended to completely and irrevocably remove alcohol from your life.

About the benefits and harms of alcohol

“Alcohol in small doses is useful in any quantity” is a joke doctors like to recall when explaining why they prefer not to tell patients about the possible benefits of moderate drinking. Nobody really doubts that excessive alcohol consumption is harmful to health. But there have been battles over moderate doses for several years now.

First you need to understand what “moderate use” is. The fact is that standards vary greatly in different countries. The differences start with what counts as one “drink”: in the UK, for example, it’s 8 grams of alcohol, and in Japan it’s almost 20. In the US, 14 grams of alcohol is considered a drink: that’s the equivalent of 350 milliliters (about a can of ) beer, 150 milliliters (about a glass) of wine or 45 milliliters (about a glass) of vodka.

Accordingly, ideas about when to stop are also different everywhere. In the UK, it is believed that 3-4 drinks (that is, 24-32 grams of alcohol) per day for a man “does not entail significant harm to health”; for women this is 2-3 servings (16-24 grams). In Japan, men are officially advised to drink no more than two servings of sake per day (39.5 grams of alcohol); There are no guidelines for women. Finally, in the US, men are advised to drink no more than two servings per day (28 grams), and women - no more than one (14 grams). By the way, the norm for women is lower not only because they usually weigh less, but also because of gender differences in the metabolism of alcohol.

Different ideas about moderation lead to some confusion when talking about the benefits and harms of “moderate consumption,” but in such cases we usually talk about 10–30 grams of alcohol per day. Moreover, apparently, any alcohol: attempts to find out which drinks have a better effect on health and which are worse (for example, does red wine really have benefits) have not yielded convincing results.

It should be noted that there is a serious problem with the science of the benefits and harms of alcohol: long-term randomized studies (that is, those where people are randomly assigned to groups and some are given alcohol for a long time, and others are not) have not been conducted on this topic. All existing studies can be divided into two types: short-term, studying the effect of alcohol on specific physiological parameters, and long-term observational, which usually compares the health of those who drink moderately and those who do not drink at all. But there are problems with both types of studies: short-term studies can only reveal short-term effects, and long-term observational ones lack randomization, that is, randomness of distribution. The group of those who do not drink at all may include, for example, people with a history of alcohol dependence or people with serious illnesses, including mental illnesses - and these factors can greatly influence their life expectancy and, accordingly, their results.

Benefit or harm

However, in the absence of other scientific data, one has to rely on what is available. Numerous studies in different countries ( , , ) have demonstrated that people who drink alcohol in moderation have slightly lower mortality rates than non-drinkers. A meta-analysis of 34 studies on the topic found that the lowest mortality rates were among men and women who drank an average of 6 grams of alcohol (about half a US drink) per day.

Such studies have severe critics: the authors of several review analyzes (,) argue that many studies on this topic contain errors and, for example, if people with a history of alcohol dependence are excluded from the “abstainer” group, then the apparent healing effect of drinking small doses practically disappears.

In any case, it is important here not to fall into the temptation to see persistent cause-and-effect relationships where, in fact, there is only correlation. Mortality rates, even in a large sample, can be influenced by hundreds of different factors that are very difficult to account for in a study. Just because moderate drinkers live longer does not necessarily mean that alcohol is causing them to live longer. Although there are reasons for such an assumption.

Benefit

A large number of scientific studies have shown the connection between moderate alcohol consumption and a reduced risk of developing a variety of cardiovascular problems. Among them are coronary heart disease, heart failure, stroke, and peripheral arterial disease. Alcohol is associated with lower mortality in people with high blood pressure.

Some studies show that light drinkers - both women and men - have a lower risk of developing gallstones than non-drinkers.

Fairly convincing evidence exists that moderate alcohol consumption is associated with a reduced risk of developing diabetes.

However, all these beneficial effects disappear as the amount of alcohol increases - usually after 3-4 drinks per day for men and 2-3 for women. That is, with more intensive drinking, the association with positive health indicators is lost and a negative correlation begins to be noted: the more you drink, the worse your health. The graphs in so many studies on this topic resemble the letter “J”: with moderate use, morbidity/mortality goes down slightly compared to the “zero” level of use, and then with increasing dose it goes up linearly.

Harm

But with the possible benefits of moderate drinking, everything is, of course, not so simple. Even light alcohol consumption is associated with an increased risk of certain types of cancer. This is especially evident with breast cancer in women: according to some data, up to 8 percent of breast cancer cases can be associated with a woman’s consumption of alcoholic beverages. Alcohol is associated with an increased risk of head and neck tumors (especially when combined with smoking), hepatic cell cancer in people with hepatitis C, and colorectal cancer (although the data is conflicting).

However, pancreatic cancer is associated only with heavy drinking (for example, 57 drinks per week for men), and the same can be said for pancreatitis: its increased risk seems to be associated only with heavy alcohol consumption.

It should be added that even minor alcohol consumption, according to some data, can increase the risk of injury.

To drink or not to drink

Given these many factors, doctors around the world are reluctant to advise patients to intentionally drink alcohol “for health reasons.” The position of the World Health Organization is not entirely clear: the European branch of the WHO believes that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption, although one of the WHO reports speaks of a “low-risk” level - no more than 20 grams per day, five days a week. And yet, most of the world's recommendations say: if a person drinks anyway, then he can continue to drink, but in moderation. Many studies refer specifically to American standards (they are, for example, contained in the 2015–2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans) - no more than two servings (14 grams of pure alcohol, corresponding, let me remind you, to about a glass of wine, a can of beer or a glass of vodka) per day for men and no more than one for non-pregnant women.

Alcohol is definitely not indicated for pregnant women: although scientists do not have enough data to talk about the dangers of small doses of alcohol for the fetus, it is not yet possible to establish a safe level of consumption, so it is wiser not to tempt fate. In addition, those who once had alcohol addiction or cases of alcoholism in the family, and anyone who has alcohol-related liver or pancreas diseases should abstain from even moderate consumption.
