Events of December 25

1991 The first President of the USSR M.S. Gorbachev resigned.

On December 25 at 19.00, the central television of the USSR broadcast an address from the first and last President of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev. Gorbachev's speech was broadcast live and became a real blow for millions of Soviet citizens. However, the Soviet people realized the full scale of the tragedy several years after the collapse of the USSR.

In his farewell speech, Mikhail Sergeevich noted that he could no longer fulfill the duties of President of the Soviet Union, for ideological and principled reasons. According to Gorbachev, the cause of the collapse of the USSR was the behind-the-scenes “games” of the leaders of the three former Soviet republics: Russia, Ukraine and Belarus.

With the decisions made in Belovezhskaya Pushcha, Boris Yeltsin, Leonid Kravchuk and Stanislav Shushkevich finished off the already collapsing Union, and the formation of the CIS put a “fat end” in this whole epic. At the Kremlin residence, the red state flag of the USSR was lowered and the flag of the Russian Federation was hoisted.

1759 academician Adam Brown obtained mercury as a result of experiments

On December 25, 1759 in St. Petersburg, a member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences, Joseph Adam Braun, conducted his research. As you know, the scientist worked on obtaining the so-called liquid metal - mercury. Using cooled mixtures, the researcher was able to lower the temperature to -56°C and thereby obtain solid mercury, which could be worked with mechanically: chopping, sawing and forging.

The scientist’s successful experiment with freezing mercury shocked the global scientific community. After all, before this it was believed that mercury could not freeze. After many years, other scientists determined the minimum freezing point of mercury -39 ° C.

Brown's experiments made it possible to develop and regulate the creation and operation of metric equipment and instruments. In particular, the use of thermometers was limited in severe frost conditions.

1917 Proclamation of the formation of the Ukrainian SSR

In the post-revolutionary period, Ukraine resembled the era of feudal fragmentation, because several pseudo-state formations were simultaneously formed on its territory: the UPR, the Ukrainian State, the Western Ukrainian People's Republic, the Donetsk-Krivoy Rog Republic, the Kuban Territory, etc. Such feudal fragmentation almost naturally led to internecine armed conflicts.

A civil war broke out in the country, which literally ruined the once richest region in two years. In conditions of complete devastation and anarchy, the only force that managed to take control of the situation was the Communist Party of Ukraine. The leadership, which in 1917 announced the creation of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic.

At this difficult moment for the country, the communists took responsibility for the future of the Ukrainian nation, mobilized the population to fight the armed detachments of temporary state formations, as well as gangs and anarchists. During the civil war, the communists were able to establish their power over much of Ukraine. In 1922, the Ukrainian SSR became part of the USSR.

1926 Hirohito is proclaimed Emperor of Japan

On December 25, 1926, the eldest son of the late Emperor Taisho, Prince Hirohito, was proclaimed the new Emperor of Japan. The official coronation of the new Emperor took place in 1928 in Kyoto. With Hirohito's rise to power, the country's military elite, using loopholes in the laws and traditions of the state, managed to take full control over the imperial family.

As a result, the power of the Emperor turned out to be largely nominal, and all spheres of the life of the state were controlled by the military, led by the generals, which pushed Japan into a criminal military adventure. During the period of Japan's participation in World War II, Emperor Hirohito was practically isolated in his residence, and his influence on social and political processes in the state was zero.

Only after Japan's defeat in the war, the role of the Emperor increased many times, the Emperor became a symbol of the unity of the people and hope for the rehabilitation of the Japanese in the eyes of the world community.

In 1947, on the initiative of Hirohito, a new “peaceful” Constitution of Japan was adopted, which defined the Japanese state as a Constitutional monarchy, where the power of the Emperor was significantly limited and its representative functions were expanded. Executive power was transferred to the Cabinet of Ministers, which was accountable to the Parliament of Japan. The Emperor also assigned himself the function of dissolving Parliament.

Signs December 25 - the day of Spiridon Solstice

In the church on December 25, the memory of Saint Spyridon of Trimythous, who lived on the territory of Cyprus in the 3rd-4th centuries, is honored. As a child, Spiridon, even despite his years, led a righteous life and sincerely believed in God, was friendly and sympathetic. For his good deeds, he was awarded the gift of healing and could also cast out demons.

After the death of his wife, Spyridon became the bishop of the city of Trimifunt in Cyprus. According to legend, one day there was a fairly long drought, and the saint was able to bring rain with the help of prayer.

By his example, Spiridon showed how a real Christian should behave; he was hardworking and kind. He also took care of strict observance of church rules and the preservation of the text of the Holy Scriptures unchanged.

In Rus', the day of December 25 was called the Revolution, and they even said that Spiridon himself turns the sun so that it does not hide from people. It was forbidden to work for Spiridon, but one could guess. People on December 25 often tried to find out whether the next year would be fertile, guided by signs. To do this, one could observe the wind.

If it changed direction during the day, then the year will be fruitful. After the solstice, the housewife had to stick a sickle into the lintel. The owner at this time wedged an ax into the threshold. They did this so that the power of the instrument would partially transfer to the house and protect the residents from evil spirits.

It was supposed to feed the chickens from the right sleeve - this way they would lay eggs better. There was a widespread tradition of calling out to the sun on December 25th. For this, people lit fires. They tried not to go into the forest unless absolutely necessary, because they believed that a bear could toss and turn in its den, hear a person, wake up and attack him.

Today the Republic of China is partially recognized, but it constantly continues to claim its rights to mainland China.

Religious holiday

Nativity

Christmas is one of the most important great Christian holidays, established in honor of the memory of the birth of Jesus Christ in the city of Bethlehem.
The Nativity of Jesus Christ is celebrated annually on December 25 and is a public holiday in more than 100 countries around the world.
The Nativity of Christ is celebrated by Catholics and Orthodox Christians in most countries of the world, Lutherans and other Protestant denominations.
Christians first celebrated Christmas in the 4th century. The real date of birth of Jesus Christ is controversial.
On December 25, before the coming of Jesus Christ, the pagan solar holiday “Birth of the Invincible Sun” was celebrated. One hypothesis correlates the date of the Nativity of Christ with the simultaneous celebration by early Christians of the Day of the Incarnation (the conception of Christ) and Easter.
The holiday of the Nativity of Christ consists of five days before the celebration (from December 20 to 24) and six days after the celebration.
On the eve of the holiday, on the day of eternity, prophecies and events from the Old Testament relating to the Nativity of Jesus are remembered and a particularly strict fast is observed - Christmas Eve, during which only raw barley or wheat grains boiled with honey are consumed. According to tradition, the fast ended with the appearance of the first evening star in the sky.
Christmas services are performed three times: at midnight, early at dawn and at noon, which symbolizes the Nativity of Christ, first in the bosom of God the Father, then in the womb of the Mother of God and finally in the soul of every Christian.
According to the main tradition of the Christmas holiday, a decorated spruce tree was installed in houses, as a symbol of the tree of paradise with abundant fruits. This pagan tradition was born among the Germanic peoples, whose rituals included spruce as a symbol of life and fertility.

SPIRIDON Solstice

On this day, Orthodox Christians honor the memory of Saint Spyridon of Trimythous, who lived in Cyprus in the 3rd and 4th centuries. From childhood, Spiridon led a pious life, was sympathetic and friendly with all people. The Lord rewarded Spiridon for his good deeds with the gift of casting out demons and healing the sick. After the death of his wife, Spyridon became a bishop in the Cypriot city of Trimifunt. As legend says, once during a long drought, Saint Spyridon caused rain with the help of his prayer; he constantly showed his flock an example of hard work and his virtuous life, becoming famous for his justice and mercy. Spyridon constantly cared about preserving the text of the Holy Scriptures unchanged and observing church traditions.
Our ancestors called today the Spiridon Turn, or the Solstice, because from that time the night decreased and the day increased. The sun turns to summer, and winter - to frost - so the peasants said, imagining that Spyridon himself was turning the luminary.
Everyone was forbidden to work for Spiridon. One could only guess about future fertility by watching the wind: if the wind changed its direction during the day, then the year would be fruitful. On the day of Spiridon, various magical rituals were performed. After the day of the Solstice, the housewife stuck her sickle into the lintel, and the owner wedged his ax into the threshold, so that the power of these tools and protection from evil spirits would be transferred to the house.
On this day, people conjured the sun - they went out to high places in the morning to meet the dawn, and in the evening they burned bonfires in honor of the luminary.

He was born so frail that the priest sadly assured his parents that the baby would not survive. But as if in protest to the clergyman, Isaac not only survived, but almost never got sick in his entire life. Good health agreed to only one loss: at the age of 84, Newton lost a tooth.

The story of the apple hitting the great scientist on the head is pretty boring. Therefore, let’s say better that Newton never married, being a very strange young man, and later, of course, not such a young man. Love hit him on the head only once - as suddenly as an apple. While studying at the Royal School in the small town of Grantham, Newton fell in love with a pretty girl named Storey. But nothing romantic happened between them. Although Newton visited his only love even in old age, when she was already a grandmother.

In 1759, December in the Russian capital turned out to be simply brutal. The air temperature in St. Petersburg dropped to -37 Celsius.

But this was not enough for academician of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences Joseph Adam Braun, a German who had settled in Russia for ten years. On December 25, 1759, while experimenting in the laboratory, using cooling mixtures, he managed to lower the temperature to -56 degrees Celsius and as a result obtained solid mercury that could be forged, chopped and sawed. A few days later, Brown and his colleague and patron, academician Mikhailo Lomonosov, repeated the experiments. He spoke about his work at a public meeting of the Academy of Sciences in a report “On the amazing cold, produced by art, from which mercury froze.”

The discovery of the freezing of mercury, reports of which appeared in many scientific journals, created a genuine sensation in the scientific world. Later, in 1785, it was established (and, by the way, also by St. Petersburg academicians) that mercury freezes already at -39 degrees Celsius.

In 1761, Peter the Third ascended to the Russian throne.

The son of Peter the Great's daughter Anna and the Holstein Duke Karl Friedrich, nephew of King Charles XII, Peter the Third was heir to two thrones - Russian and Swedish.

He became the Russian emperor thanks to the efforts of his aunt, Empress Elizaveta Petrovna. Despite the infantilism and frivolity of the emperor, his first steps evoked approval in society: he liquidated the Secret Chancellery, returned Biron, Minich, Lestocq, Lopukhin and other disgraced figures from exile. Historians reproach Peter the Third for lacking a political eye: the decree “On the Liberty of the Nobility” and the alliance with Prussia are considered gross mistakes. The main enemy of Peter the Third was his wife - the future Catherine the Second, who twice conspired against her husband and achieved his deposition.

In 1905, a Bolshevik conference was held in the southern Finnish city of Tammerfors (now Tampere), at which Lenin and the twenty-six-year-old delegate from Tiflis Dzhugashvili met for the first time.

Stalin later recalled that when he saw Lenin, he was disappointed: he supposedly expected to see a big man, “not only politically, but, if you like, physically big, because Lenin seemed to me like a giant.”

As you know, both Lenin and Stalin were almost equally short. However, Lenin’s impressions of his first meeting with Stalin have not been preserved - perhaps Stalin did not make any impression on him then.

On December 25, 1917, Soviet power was proclaimed in Ukraine for the first time. For the first time - because then it was overthrown by the Central Rada, and the German occupiers, who installed Hetman Skoropadsky, and the Petliura Directory, but in 1919, Soviet power returned - for more than 72 years.

In 1918, the third president of Egypt, Anwar Sadat, was born.

Elected in 1970 after the death of Gamal Abdel Nasser, who had the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star of the Hero of the Soviet Union, Sadat led his political course. In 1972, he expelled Moscow “military advisers” from Egypt, and the following year began a lightning war against Israel on the most important Jewish holiday - Judgment Day. Sadat was close to victory, but Israeli General Sharon, the future prime minister, saved his country with a tank raid behind Egyptian lines. After this, Sadat became imbued with the ideas of peace in the Middle East.

In 1977, he made an unprecedented trip to Jerusalem and spoke in the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, and in 1978 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize along with Israeli Prime Minister Begin. But Muslim fanatics in Egypt did not forgive Anwar Sadat for trying to establish peace. On October 6, 1981, he was shot at point-blank range during a military parade. During the ensuing shootout, some government members and foreign guests present at the parade were also killed or wounded. Sadat's successor was Vice President Hosni Mubarak (by the way, he was also wounded in the arm during the assassination attempt on Sadat).
